Arthritis and CBD…does it work?

Arthritis pain is as bad as it sounds. If you have any type of arthritis or know someone who does, then you’re most likely familiar with the harrowing pain and stiffness that comes with it. Well, this article will help you understand what arthritis is, the types and common causes as well as an exciting new alternative treatment for arthritis.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis, also known as joint inflammation, is a disease that affects one or more joints, making it burdensome to move or stay active. Joints are places where two or more bones meet. There’s a particular connective tissue called articulate cartilage which plays an important role in helping the joints to move smoothly without pain or friction. So, when there’s inflammation or degeneration of the joints, it can cause pain when you use the joint. While arthritis normally affects adults (older adults), it can, however, affect men, women, and children of any age.

The disease is mostly found occurring in the following areas of the body:

  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Hands
  • Feet
  • Lower back

What are the types of Arthritis?

There are various types of arthritis with different causes, which may include infections, underlying diseases, wear and tear, among others. The common types include:

Osteoarthritis (OA): This is the most common type of arthritis. It usually occurs when there is degeneration of the joint cartilage due to repeated stress, overuse, body weight, age, family history, past joint injury, among others. Some parts of the body commonly affected by this type are the hips, hands, back, and hips.

Gout: This kind of arthritis mostly affects the big toe, however, it can also affect other joints in the body like the feet, wrists, hands, knees, and ankles. It is caused by a large amount of urate crystals or uric acid in the body. Everyone has a certain amount of uric acid in their body. Eating or drinking too much of some types of food and alcoholic drinks can result in some people having more urate in their bodies.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): This is the type in which your immune system (the body’s defense) attempts to cause damage to the joints, starting with the joints lining. It often affects the hands and feet, and can also affect internal organs and systems like the heart and lungs, causing an individual to feel sick and tired.

Juvenile arthritis (JA): This is a type that affects children’s joints. It’s a group of autoimmune disorders that affect children. It starts to manifest in children at 16 or younger. It can lead to misalignment of joints, eroding of bones, changing of growth patterns, tightening of soft tissues and muscles, among others.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA): This is a painful condition that develops in people that have psoriasis (an autoimmune disorder that irritates). The most commonly affected part of this body is the fingers. The fingers will appear pink and sausage-like. Psoriatic arthritis may also move to the spine.

Ankylosing Spondylitis: This is a disease that causes damage to the spine (usually your lower back) and pelvis. This type is hereditary. Most people that develop this type of arthritis have the HLA-B27 gene.

What are the causes of Arthritis?

The causes differ according to the type of arthritis, therefore, there’s no particular cause of all types of arthritis.

The following are possible causes:

  • Hereditary factors or genes.
  • Injuries
  • Infections (bacterial and viral)
  • Age
  • Autoimmune disorders/dysfunction
  • Obesity
  • Weakness of the muscle
  • Repeated stress on the joints

What are the signs and symptoms of Arthritis?

  • The rigidity of the joint, that is, stiffness and this can lead to poor functioning of the joints
  • Growth of bones (bony growth) in the fingers
  • Identical joints on both sides of the body are affected
  • Range of motion will be limited
  • Weakness of the muscle around the joint
  • Tenderness of the joints
  • Redness and pain in the joints
  • Swelling of joints

How can I treat Arthritis?

Even though there’s no cure for the disease, treatments have proven to be productive recently and for many types of arthritis, there’s an obvious advantage in starting treatment early. Pharmacological therapy, that is, the use of medications is a major way to manage arthritis.

Are there alternative remedies for Arthritis?

Well, the truth is that therapy does not have to be only through artificial medications. There are several alternative treatments you can try out for your arthritic pain. The good thing about many of these is that they are easy to find and not expensive.

Eating healthy diets, regular exercise, and avoidance of stress can help individuals with arthritis preserve their overall health.
